SCROLL DOWN FOR STORY

An all-star team comprised of thirteen Central Maine MSBL players, and one player from the Maine Woods 45 League, recently won the 42+ division of the Downeast Wood Bat Classic in Portland.Players from the Dodgers, Outlaws, Rockies, Red Sox and Cardinals were victorious over teams from New York, Massachusetts, and Portland. Game winning pitchers for the Central Maine team were Greg Massey of the Outlaws, Joe Baum of the Maine Woods 45, and Jim Morris of the Red Sox.  Stu Jump of the Rockies was voted MVP by his teammates and will receive a Rawlings gift certificate courtesy of  MSBL.  Stu went 4 for 6 in the tournament and had 7 RBI’s including a three run double in game one and a two run double in the championship game. Greg Massey pitched a shutout against the Massachusetts team in the opener and also got the save in the second game against the Albany team.  Hank Ogilby of the Dodgers scored the game winning run in the championship game on Sunday. The game was stopped after four innings because of rain. In the bottom of the fourth Hank led off with a walk. Jim Morris hit a solid single to left and the runners were moved along with a sac bunt by Steve Curtin. Hank, now at third with one out, took a rather generous lead in anticipation of the squeeze bunt.  The pitcher caught Hank off guard with a throw to third and Hank(who, in his own words, demonstrated outstanding speed, risk-taking, daring, and extraordinary baseball intelligence)…was forced to bolt for home. The third baseman threw to the plate beating Hank by about a step. He slid into the catcher and the ball was jarred loose giving the Central Maine Dodgers a 5-4 victory!   This was the second regional tournament championship for the Central Maine Dodgers, having won the 38+ division in the Albany Northeast Regional Tournament in 1998.
