Aug 17 Sunday afternoon in
-------------------------------------------- Aug
17 The spark plug for the White Sox this last
Sunday was Steve LaBossiere going 4-4 with 2 stolen bases. He also
came in to pitch the third inning with one out and bases loaded as the Dodger hitters
had 4 straight hits. Labossire K'd one and got Arsenault to pop out
to left. Dodger pitching really kept the Sox off balance until the 7th inning
when they scored 4 to go up 6-3. The pesky Dodger offense seemed to
threaten every inning including the 9th. With runners on 2nd and 3rd
winning pitcher Bourdon punched out the last batter of the day to seal the
victory with some high heat. The Dodger hitting attack was lead by Ethan Ogilby with
2 doubles, Harry Dwyer and Eddie Crocker had 2 singles each.

10 White Sox victorious against the Rockies 7-2
Sunday morning at Pettingill Park. The Sox scored 3 in the 3rd, 2 in the
4th and added a couple more in the eighth. LaBossiere was 3-3 with two
walks. Borque was also 3-3. Several rallies by the Rockies were quickly
halted by hard hit balls resulting in inning ending double plays. Winning
pitcher Sean Cheetham went 5 followed by set up man Marc Gosselin to have
Labossiere throw the last 3 . South paw Scott took the loss and Brodeur
finished the game for the Rockies. Brodeur was the only repeat hitter for
the Rockies. As always it was fun to play a great group of guys from
Fairfield.
-------------------------------------------- Aug 10 The eighth place Dodgers knocked off the first place Westies today in an upset at the Field of Dreams in Harrison. Dodger starter Steve Curtin pitched into the seventh inning, giving up seven hits and two runs and getting his second playoff victory.(pitched a complete game last week against the Indians) The Westies got the first run of the game in the third when Kelvin DeCato doubled and was driven in by Mark Hreben. Jerod Verrill led off the fourth with a double but the following three batters flew out to end the inning. The Dodgers tied the game in the top of the fifth on a towering home run to left center by John Riitano. In the bottom of the fifth the Westies scored their second run on a single by Wes Smith, who stole second and was driven in by Brian Cox. In the top of the sixth Rusty Klobas came up with a bases loaded single to center scoring Ethan Ogilby and Harry Dwyer giving the Dodgers a 3-2 lead. Cornell Knight came in to pitch for the Dodgers with one out in the seventh and runners on second and third. He was able to shut the door on the Westies with a K and a ground ball. The Westies led off both the eighth and ninth with singles but Knight's pitching remained sharp and the Dodgers held on to the 3-2 lead for the win. --------------------------------------------- CARR DRIVES WINTHROP PAST GOODY’S
Ricker Jr applies the tag to pickoff Goody's base runner Ricker Sr is called out on a close play at 1st base Aug 10 With the strength of his arm and quickness of his bat, winning pitcher Torey Carr helped maneuver the Red Sox past the Goody’s Guys of Pittsfield 9-3 at Winthrop HS Sunday, which in turn eliminated the Goody’s from the playoffs. After allowing 3 hits and a run in the first inning, Carr cruised the next 5 allowing just 2 more hits before giving way to Jim Morris. Goody’s kept the game close by throwing good leather in the infield until the bottom of the 5th when Carr came through with a bases loaded triple to right making the score 7-1. The Sox would add 2 more in the 6th accounting for their 9 runs. Brett Witherell collected 3 singles for Winthrop with Dave Ricker Jr adding a double & single. The Goody’s repeat hitters were Gary Morin (3 singles), Charlie Bassett and Ryan White (2 singles). ------------------------------------------------------- DODGERS & GOODY'S GUYS ADVANCE Umpire, Ken Millett, rings up Indians batter called 3rd strike Dodger left fielder holds Indians runner to 3rd Aug 3 The Downeast Dodgers upended the Kennebec Indians 8-3 in the preliminary round of the playoffs behind a strong pitching performance from Steve Curtin who went the distance in picking up the win. The Dodgers travel to the Field of Dreams in Harrison to take on the West Paris Westies next Sunday. In other prelim action, the Goody's Guys squeaked past the Great Falls Outlaws 10-9 to advance and will face the Winthrop Red Sox at Winthrop HS next Sunday. ------------------------------------------------------ "HOUSE SPARKS WINTHROP’S VICTORY" Carr's winning form House steals 2nd as the ball hovers over his back July 29 Leadoff hitter, Mike House, reached safely and scored on all 4 of his at bats Tuesday night in Winthrop to propel the Red Sox past the Green Wave of Oakland 9-1 in the final regular season game of the year. The combo of winning pitcher, Torey Carr (5 innings) and Brett Witherell (2 innings), limited the Wave to just 2 hits on the night. Dave Ricker Jr led the Red Sox offensively with a double and single while John Laverdiere doubled and scored the lone run for the Green Wave. JD Durrell suffered the loss on the evening. --------------------------------------------------- July
27 The Cardinals defeated the Outlaws at Pettengill
Park Sunday by a score of 3-1. The game was shortened to 5 innings
due to lightning, rain, and darkness. Steve LaPointe went the distance, giving up four hits to get the
win. Ryan Palmer had three hits, including two doubles. Rich
Todd had a double and a triple to lead the Cards. After a 1-3
start, the Cards are now 10-3.
The Cards did score 5 in the sixth to make it
8-1 before mother nature struck.
---------------------------------------------------- July 27 Jerod Verrill hit a 3- run homer to left in the top of the ninth to spark the Westies to victory. Each team managed only 4 hits a piece as Whitney and Godin held down the White Sox while Cheetham and Gosselin blanked the Westies until the ninth. ------------------------------------------------------ RED SOX 'DODGE' DODGERS
Dodger Manager, Bill Arsenault, confirs with relief pitcher, Wentworth July 25 The Red Sox, despite committing 6 defensive errors, base running blunders, and lack of hustle by Bob Cochran, who would have been benched if not for just 9 players, still managed a 15-7 drubbing over the Downeast Dodgers Friday night in Boothbay Harbor. The Sox took a 3-0 lead in the top of the 2nd after Eric Palleschi hit his 5th consecutive double of the season with 1 out. Cochran followed with a double down the left field line, in which Palleschi failed to score on due to a piano on his back and by dropping anchor at 3rd base. RBI man, David Ricker, then doubled to right center plating both runners and eventually scored on a wild pitch to close out the scoring. The Dodgers answered back in the bottom of the frame when winning pitcher, Jim Morris, served up a towering solo home run to center field off the bat of John Roitano. That's as close as the Dodgers would get as Winthrop scored runs in all but the 1st and 8th innings. Red Sox hitters touched up Dodger "All Star" pitchers for 15 hits with Morris, the only bright spot on the night, collecting 4. Palleschi, Cochran, Ricker and Josh Nichols also repeated for Winthrop. Slumping, John Bourque, once again went hitless on the night. Hank Ogilby led the Dodgers 10 hit night with a double and 2 singles, while Roitano and Rusty Klobas were also repeat offenders. Winthrop improves to 9-3 on the season, while the Dodgers fall to 4-9. -------------------------------------------- July

lights at the Field of Dreams in Harrison thursday night by the score of
6-2. Mike Godin pitched 6 innings of 7 hit ball while Mark Hreben
closed out the game with 2 strike outs and a fly ball to end the
game. The Westies used efficient hitting to score 2 runs in the 1st
and 4 runs in the 5th. Kyle Kennison and Tony Smith each had rbi
doubles in the first to put the Westies on top. In the 5th Jerry
Verrill's single plated Rick Whitney, Kelvin Decato knock in a run with a
clutch double and Brian Coxs' double plated 2 runs to put the Westies
ahead with a comfortable lead. Auburn came back in the 6th with 2
runs behind the hitting of Coleman,Wasenski,Cheethan (2hits) , and Hlister
before Godin and Hreben stopped the rally. West Paris inproves to
8-1 in he league while Auburn falls to 6-4.

16 The Cards scored 6 in the first and held on to
beat the Indians Wednesday, by a score of 9-4. Mark Palmer threw the
first six to get the win. Brian Bessy took the loss. Ed
Thompson, who had 3 hits for the Indians, pitched well in four innings of
relief.

Cardinals defeated Gilman's Guys 2-0. Steve LaPointe pitched the first six, allowing one hit, no walks,
and striking out 8. Rich Todd threw the two hitless innings and Ryan
Palmer earned his fifth straight save. Charlie Bassett pitched very well, taking the loss. He was
well-rested with 13 years between appearances. The Cards got all they needed in the second when Josh
Aylward singled, reached second on an error, and scored on LaPointe's
single. The Cards got an insurance run in the fifth on Rich Todd's
RBI infield groundout. For the Cards,
Aylward had three hits, and R. Palmer and LaPointe each had two.
It was the fifth straight win for the
Cardinals
---------------------------------------------- July

first inning then held on to beat
the Dodgers 8-7 Sunday at Maranacook
--------------------------------------------- WESTIES SHUT OUT RED SOX 8-0 Whitney brings his "A" Game to Perham Field July 13 West Paris pitcher, Rich Whitney, aided by the long ball from his offense earned a complete game shut-out win over the Red Sox 8 – 0 Sunday in West Paris by allowing just 4 hits, 1 walk and 8 strike outs. Winthrop’s only scoring opportunity came in the 9th inning when Joe Wilson tried to score from 3rd on a passed ball but was fittingly tagged out by Whitney to end the game to preserve the shut-out. A monster 2 run homer off the bat of Kyle Kennison to straight away center in the 4th is all the Westies (6-1) would need for run support, but for good measure, later in the game, Tony Smith added a 2 run shot and Mark Hreben a solo shot as Red Sox outfielders could just watch as the balls sailed out of Perham Field. Jim Morris, who struggled with the beach sand mound all morning, took the loss for Winthrop (8-3). Mike Godin, Wes Smith, Tony Smith and Kennison were all repeat hitters for West Paris, while Winthrop’s Mike House repeated for the 3rd straight game. ------------------------------------------------------ RED SOX HOLD OFF INDIANS 7-5 Torey Carr leads off from 1st as Mike Chamard looks in for a sign July 7 Winthrop scored 5 times in the top of the 7th inning sparked by Josh Nichols’ 2 run single, which proved to be the game winning hit as the Red Sox held on to beat the Indians 7-5 Monday night under the lights. The Indians didn’t go away easy, answering back with 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th with RBI hits from Mike Chamard and Derrick Crommett closing the gap to within 4. In the bottom of the 9th, the Indians scored 2 more times and then loaded the bases before relief pitcher, Matt Richardson, struck out Jim Flagg to end the game. Torey Carr got the win for Winthrop hurling 7 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and fanning 8. Chris Bessey suffered the loss for the Indians. The big sticks in the game for Winthrop were Brett Witherell, collecting 3 hits, with Carr and Mike House adding 2 hits each. The Indians were led by Chamard, pounding out 3 hits of his own, with Bessey and Rocky DeSanctis repeating as well. Next Sunday, the Indians host the Downeast Dodgers at Maranacook HS, while the Red Sox travel to West Paris to take on the first place Westies in a key match up. ------------------------------------------------ July
2 In the lightning, the Cardinals held off the
Westies at West Paris, for a 3-2 victory.
The Cards struck first in the first inning
off loser Brian Cox, who went the distance. Rich Todd reached on a
fielder's choice, Josh Aylward singled, and Pete Puiia walked. Steve
LaPointe then hit a two run singe to give the Cards a 2-0
lead.
Kyle Kennison answered with a sacrifice fly
in the first, scoring Tony Smith who led off the game with a
single.
Mike McBride tied the game with a solo homer
in the third.
In the fifth Kevin Gallant singled as did
Marcus Palmer. Gallant scored the game winner on Travis Brooks'
single to center.
Brooks and Rick Whitney were the game's only
repeat hitters.
Mark Palmer pitched the first five to get the
win. Ryan Palmer closed the door over the last two.
The Cardinals turned four double plays
including a bizzare double play to end the sixth inning. With one
out and Westies on first and third, Ryan Palmer faked to third and the
runner at first went. Palmer ran at the runner at first and the
runner at third broke for the plate. Eventually, both runners were
tagged out to end the inning.
The win was the Cardinals' fourth in a
row.

June 29 In a rain shortened 6 inning affair, the Red Sox came out on top with a 10-3 win over the Gilman’s Guys in Pittsfield. Winning pitcher, Jim Morris, did not have his best stuff by walking 7 and 1 hit batsman, but came up big when he needed to with 7 strike outs. His offense scored 4 runs in the 3rd inning and 6 in the 5th in guiding the team to victory. Dave Ricker Jr, Bob Cochran & Josh Nichols led the Red Sox attack with 2 hits a piece. Gilman’s Guys Jeremy Bragg had 2 hits of his own on the day. The Red Sox take on the Kennebec Indians under the lights Monday July 7th 7:30 start at Auburn Suburban. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- CARDINALS GLIDE PAST RED SOX BY A SCORE OF 3-2
Sorry Pete Puiia, you've lost a step or two over the years Rich Todd connects on a run scoring triple June 25 Kevin Gallant’s RBI infield hit in the 4th inning sealed the deal for the Cardinals as they handed the Red Sox a 3-2 defeat in a Wednesday night match up in Rumford. Winthrop (6-2) scored first in the 2nd inning with back-to-back singles from Jim Morris and John Bourque, followed by an RBI double by Dave Ricker. Rumford (4-3) answered back in the 3rd when Ryan Palmer drove in Travis Brooks with his 2nd of 3 hits on the night, followed by an RBI triple off the bat of Rich Todd. in an outstanding game at Messalonskee High on Sunday with the Cards
prevailing 6-5. Mark Palmer threw 4 strong innings after a rough
start. Ryan Palmer threw two shutout innings to get the
win.
Kris Targett pitched into the fifth and was
relieved by JD Durrell who took the loss. In the second Targett hit
a ball that would have made it out of Yellowstone, good for a two run
double.
Ed Paterson, Rich Todd, Ryan Palmer, and
Bitsy Ionta were repeat hitters for the Cards. Targett and Marceau
had two each for the Green Wave.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PALLESCHI DOUBLES WINTHROP TO VICTORY!
Palleschi leads off 2nd base following 1 of his 2 doubles June 15 On a damp Sunday morning in Winthrop, Eric Palleschi hit his first of 2 doubles on the day driving in Dave Ricker for the go-ahead and eventual game winning run in the bottom of the 6th inning as the Red Sox (5-1) went on to defeat the Central Maine Green Wave (2-5) of Oakland 12-1. The Wave plated their only run in the top of the 1st inning with Joel Fernald pushing Kris Target across the plate with a double. Richard Doble pitched 6 strong innings for the Wave suffering the loss. Doble, Target and John Durrell also hit safely for the Green Wave. Dave Ricker finishes a 6-4-3 DP in 5th inning Ricker scrambles to safety at 3rd base May 18, 2008 In Winthrop, a pitcher’s dual between Steve LaPointe of Rumford and Jim Morris of Winthrop for 5 innings turned into a one-sided slug fest in the bottom of the 6th inning by the Red Sox. The Cardinals pushed a run across in the top of the 2nd inning on hits by Pete Puiia, Marcus Palmer, and an RBI single off the bat of Mark Palmer. After being held to just one hit through 4 innings, the Red Sox took the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the 5th on a triple by Brett Witherell who then scored on a fielders choice. Later that inning, the elder David Ricker drove in Josh Nichols from 2nd base with a base it up the middle. After Morris retired the Cardinals in order in the 6th inning, the Red Sox bats exploded. The Sox sent 17 batters to the plate scoring 12 runs in the inning. Dave Ricker Jr. got the assault started with a base hit followed by a walk and another hit, then Witherell, Bob Cochran, and Josh Nichols tripled back-to-back-to-back. After 3 more hits to load the bases, young Ricker hit a grand slam HR to blow the game open. Ricker hit a 2nd HR in the 8th inning and finished the game with 3 hits, 6 RBI’s and 3 runs scored. Auburn jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Marc Gosselin but the Red Sox answered back with a run in the 3rd and 3 runs in the 4th to take the lead for good. Rich Ozment doubled in a run in the 7th for Winthrop, then after a walk and a base hit to load the bases, Ricker got the key hit of the inning; also finishing with 3 hits, 3 RBI’s, and 2 runs scored on the night. Other repeat hitters for Winthrop were Mike House, Brett Witherell, and Bob Cochran. Auburn’s offense was lead by Tom Bourden’s double and single with Marc Gosselin adding a pair of hits. Torey Carr got the win on the mound. ----------------------------------------------------------------
May 10, 2008 White Sox 4 Cardinals 3 in 10 innings at Pettingill Park. Countless errors by the White Sox put them down 3-1 early in the contest. The Sox chipped away with an rbi double from M.Gosselin in the 5th to make it 3-2. LaBossiere singled in the 9th with two outs followed by a stolen base. Repeat hitters for the Cardinals were M Palmer and for the Sox Brennan,Coleman and M Gosselin. -------------------------------------------------------------- Red Sox Open Season With A Win
May 11, 2008 The Winthrop Red
Sox upended the Boothbay Dodgers 7-1 in their season opener of the MSBL.
The highlight of the game, by
far, was the pitching performance of 51 yr old veteran, Jim Morris. Morris was working on a no-hitter
through 7 innings before Hank Ogilby broke it up with a base hit to left
in the top of the 8th.
Morris, who was a bone marrow donor to a non-relative just 3 weeks
ago, wasn’t even sure if he’d be able to play ball, let alone pitch, at
the start of the season. His
performance today proved to be the answer (what a machine!); walking 4 and
striking out 3 in his 7 innings of work. Brett Witherell capped off the
final 2 innings. The Red Sox
had a balanced hitting attack with each player hitting safely led by Josh
Nichols’ double, single and RBI and Matt Richardson’s 2 singles and
RBI. Mike House and Dave
Ricker, Jr. each doubled and Bob Cochran tripled for the winners. Top hitters for the Dodgers were
Ogilby, Eddie Crocker, and Rusty Klobas each with a single. WP-Morris LP-Eddie Crocker. Next Sunday the Dodgers travel to
Auburn to face the White Sox at Pettingill Park, while the Red Sox host
the Rumford Cardinals at Winthrop HS; both at 9 a.m.
